Supporting a Sibling or Friend with Anxiety: A Guide for Teens and Young Adults

When someone close to you—like a sibling or friend—is dealing with anxiety, it can be challenging to know how to help. Your support plays a crucial role in their journey toward managing their anxiety. Here are some practical steps you can take to be there for them:

1. Be Present

Simply being there can make a significant difference. Your presence offers comfort and reassurance. Ask if they want to talk about what’s happening, but understand if they prefer not to.

2. Find a Quiet Space

During moments of high anxiety, a calm environment can be soothing. Help them find a quiet place where they feel safe. Respect their need for silence if they don’t wish to discuss their feelings.

3. Be Calm and Understanding

Your calm demeanor can have a positive impact. Acknowledge the difficulty of their situation and commend their bravery in facing their anxiety.

4. Reach Out for Additional Support

If you’re unsure whether they’re receiving the help they need, consider talking to a trusted adult, such as a parent or guardian. They can assist in initiating therapy or other support services.

5. Take Care of Yourself

Supporting someone with anxiety can be emotionally taxing. Ensure you have your own support system—whether it’s a teacher, another friend, or a family member—to share your feelings and experiences.

Remember, while you can’t “fix” their anxiety, your support is invaluable. By being present, understanding, and encouraging, you can help them navigate their challenges and feel less alone.
