Treatment lasts about as long as a school semester. Here’s what will happen during those meetings:

Phase I - Build Awareness
In initial sessions, you will become an expert in understanding anxiety as you become aware of patterns of thoughts and behaviors that may be strengthening the anxiety response. You’ll be able to recognize when anxiety is in control of what you think and do, and how treatment will help you to make decisions for yourself that are coping-focused and intentional.

Phase II - Build Anxiety Management Skills
Next, you will learn core skills for managing fear, stress, and worry. These skills include learning how to self-soothe and stay focused when upset, quickly identify anxious thinking and coach yourself into realistic, problem-focused action plans, and to take action to engage in situations that you’d typically avoid. By the end of treatment, you will be able to anticipate when anxiety is pushing you towards avoidance and problematic behavior, and have a concrete plan for how to challenge it head on.

Phase III - Practice
The most important part of treatment is practicing using these new skills in situations where your anxiety might occur. Your therapist will help to set a comfortable pace to practice these skills while learning new thought patterns and actions to break the anxiety cycle.
