Sarah Olivo, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist who believes that empathy, collaboration and a sense of humor are the bases for any good therapy. Sarah is a staunch believer in evidenced-based psychology and has worked diligently to become fluent in many forms of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). In short, Sarah’s approach has rigorous research at its core, and she continually seeks out training opportunities so that she can be on the front lines of the most modern and effective treatments. Sarah brings over 20 years of clinical experience when helping her clients get the changes they want out of their lives, as quickly as possible. Her goal as the Head of Lumate Academy is to help spread CBT far and wide so that children, teens and young adults with less access can start making these changes as well.
Sarah’s love of psychology began at Duke University, when she took Abnormal Psych and was convinced she had all of the disorders. Luckily, her professor warned her that would happen. After Sarah graduated, she worked in book publishing where she got to work with authors like Malcolm Gladwell, James Patterson, and Deepak Chopra. Loving that job as much as she did, Sarah still knew psychology was her passion. She received her doctoral degree from Boston University, where she was trained in the nationally-renowned Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders and participated in groundbreaking CBT efficacy studies. Sarah interned at the Bellevue Hospital/NYU Child Study Center, and stayed at NYU for her postdoctoral training. She has served on the faculty of NYU Medical Center and Weill Cornell Medical Center. Sarah has received advanced training in CBT, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), exposure and response prevention (ERP), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based CBT, and Supporting Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE).
Sarah is currently the co-founder of City and Country CBT, a private practice in New York City and Westchester. She is also the co-host of the “College Is Fine, Everything’s Fine” podcast with Dr. Liz Seidler, which aims to disseminate CBT skills to college students in order to normalize and reduce college pressures.
As well as being a psychologist, Sarah is the mother of two children and a bulldog named Chubbs. She’s an avid reader and a not-avid runner. When Sarah is not in therapy sessions, she spends much of her time trying to get her children off screens. She love taking writing classes, going on family walks with her dog, and working in her community to increase mental health awareness. The skills Sarah is teaching to others? You’ll find her using the very same ones, because life for everyone is messy and wonderful.
